The
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework for promoting
sustainable technological development and efficient utilization of resources. An
engineer, irrespective of their engineering discipline, can contribute to the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by applying interdisciplinary knowledge,
innovation, and problem-solving skills to real-world challenges. Outcome-Based
Education (OBE) emphasizes measurable competencies, encouraging engineers to design
sustainable solutions with tangible social, economic, and environmental
outcomes. From an engineering perspective, biotechnology integrates biological
systems with engineering principles to develop scalable, efficient, and
sustainable processes for addressing societal and environmental challenges. Overall, it focuses on process development,
scale-up, optimization, automation, resource efficiency, and sustainable system
design. These approaches
facilitate the translation of biological discoveries into practical
technologies and industrial processes, thereby supporting sustainable
development through engineering innovation. By combining technical
expertise with ethics, teamwork, creativity, and community engagement,
engineers can address local needs while supporting global SDG targets and
demonstrating meaningful, measurable outcomes.

This event marked the birth of a new chapter in our institution, one dedicated to promoting the knowledge and interest that MBSI represents. The inaugural ceremony started off with a welcoming song, the Ganesh Vandana, performed by the student members. A sense of enthusiasm and anticipation filled the air as the inaugural ceremony unfolded. It was followed by the felicitation of the dignitaries and esteemed faculty members. The guests of honour comprised Dr. Swapna Chatterjee (National Secretory of MBSI), Dr. Harekrishna Jana (Coordinator of MBSI, VU), Dr. Anindya Biswas (Assistant Professor, Microbiology Division, Department of Botany, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan), Dr. Subrata Mondal (Principal of HIT, Haldia). Throughout the event, there were speeches highlighting MBSI's objectives, mission, and the positive impact it aimed to make within the broader community. The distinguished individuals delivered a precise and informative presentation, elucidating numerous facets of the microbiological domain. Dr. A.M Deshmukh (National President of MBSI) and Dr. Bipransh Kumar Tiwary (State President of MBSI, WB) also joined for an online session to further enlighten the students about the roles and aspirations of MBSI.

The
achievements of Biotechnology students from Haldia Institute of Technology,
Haldia, demonstrate how scientific education, perseverance, and research
aspirations can open doors to international academic opportunities. The
institute’s official alumni records and departmental materials document
graduates progressing to reputed universities across Europe and North America.
These journeys are especially inspiring because it shows the breadth of
opportunities available to biotechnology graduates, from advanced biomedical
research and molecular biology to interdisciplinary scientific innovation.
Further, these achievements inspire aspiring biotechnologists to dream beyond
geographical boundaries and contribute to scientific innovation, healthcare
advancement, and global research. The department thus represents a potential
launching pad for students seeking international exposure and promising
scientific careers.
Higher Studies prospects for Biotechnology students of Haldia Institute of Technology, Haldia, are encouraging, with the department reporting that its graduates have qualified in national-level examinations and progressed to reputed Indian and international universities for higher education and research. Students target premier institutions such as IITs, NITs, DIAT Pune, IISER Kolkata, BRIC-CDFD and other leading research institutes for postgraduate and doctoral programmes in biotechnology, life sciences, biomedical sciences, and interdisciplinary research, subject to programme-specific eligibility. The GATE Biotechnology (BT), Life Sciences (XL), and Biomedical Engg. (BM) papers provide important pathways to eligible master's and doctoral programmes, while JAM offers routes to selected postgraduate science programmes at IITs and participating institutions. Department supports this progression through its programme, research activities, and faculty engagement in projects funded by national agencies such as DBT, DST, CSIR, and MSME.
